Buying for a man at any time of the year can be a tricky thing to master, let alone at Christmas – they either have everything, they have nothing or even worse, they have most things and you have to spend half of the year trying to trick them into telling you what they don’t have; not exactly festive!
However there will (hopefully) always be one essential that the modern gent is missing, so for my gift guide this year I’m looking to that dapper gent that likes the best of the best and the essentials he needs in everyday life – they’re fail safe luxury – the only thing to figure out is which one to buy him…or all of them if you’re feeling extra (extra) generous!
Mulberry ‘Ted’ convertible messenger bag – Every man needs a good quality bag. This one converts from a messenger to a briefcase and also a backpack so he can flip it around depending on function or style -I’ve been using this bag for the previous 5 years and it’s still one of my favourites; the classic design and sturdy leather make it a great everyday bag!
Bottega Veneta Intrecciato leather chest pocket wallet – No modern gent wants a bulky wallet because pretty much no-one carries cash anymore – a sleek chest wallet will be spacious enough for all his cards, business and credit and sleek enough to slide neatly into his jacket pocket.
Kingsman & Swaine Adeney brigg chestnut wood-handle umbrella – An umbrella is one of those things that are essential in London and a good quality one shows that a gent really cares about all areas of style, plus it’s not going to break into two at the sight of a gentle breeze.
Garrett Leight California Optical round frame tortoise shell sunglasses – For when the sun does come out a pair of universal frames are great to go with every outfit. Tortoise Shell is a classic and will look great with black, brown and everything in-between.
Smythson Panama cross-grain leather notebook – If like me you have to write everything down otherwise you forget it immediately, then this is the perfect gift – not only should the bag be smart but also the contents, so this will keep the style conscious man happy.
Montblanc Meisterstück classique platinum fountain pen – See the above gift and this is the perfect pen to compliment a great notebook. Montblanc creates pieces that will last forever so this is a great investment piece.
Tom Ford Silk Satin Bow Tie – Every now and again a black tie event pops up and you have to bring out the tux and don the bow tie, so why not do it in Tom Ford.
Junghans Meister chronoscope gold-tone and alligator watch – A luxury time piece is great but something a little more wearable for everyday is always a great option – something simple and clean like this Junghans one will integrate perfectly into his existing wardrobe.
When buying for that special man in your life, just remember to think about what he does on a daily basis, if he’s more comfortable in casual attire rather than a tux then a bow tie might not be the best option!
